Over the course of her career, Rebecca’s clinical work has focused on the treatment of voice disorders for professional and non-professional voice users. She has particular expertise in treating the voice professional, and her extensive background as a singer and voice teacher has been particularly beneficial to singers. Her primary passions for treating her patients continue to be that they might use their voices as they wish, that they might gain maximal control over their voices to the degree that they are physically able, and that they might safely integrate their voices in as many facets of their lives as is demanded. Particular interests include:
- Pre- and post-operative vocal cord wound healing
- Benign, non-operative vocal cord growth resolution
- Professional voice strength and balance
- Vocal cord dysfunction, including paresis and paralysis
- Laryngeal hypersensitivity and chronic cough
In addition to working closely with the laryngologists at The Voice Clinic of Indiana, Rebecca also collaborates with other otolaryngologists, pulmonologists, and asthma/allergy specialists in Central Indiana.
Rebecca has presented for the Indiana Speech Language Hearing Association, the Indiana Voice and Dysphagia Association, and The Indiana Choral Directors Association on several occasions. In addition, Rebecca has provided educational lectures to voice major and non-voice major students in the Communication Disorders Schools and Music Schools of several area universities. Finally, she has presented to various civic groups, such as the Indianapolis Symphony Chorus, and multiple public and private school singing groups in the Central Indiana region.

More About Rebecca
Rebecca Risser grew up in a small town in southern Michigan, Sturgis. Following her master’s degree in music, she underwent surgical repair of vocal cord nodules. She credits these first experiences as a patient with her future career change to the field of Speech Pathology. Seven years into vigorous attempts to create a career in the world of opera as a lyric soprano, she applied to and was accepted into the Department of Speech and Language Sciences at Indiana University. While in Bloomington, she met her husband, Jerry Risser, a small-animal veterinarian and a medical bioethicist. In 2003, they had the great blessing of adopting two children from Russia, followed immediately by a pregnancy, bringing all three babies home in the space of 10 months! It has been a joyful, busy, symphonic tapestry of baseball, soccer, horseback riding, gymnastics and tumbling, cross country skiing, swimming, running, singing, travelling and homework (for all of us) ever since.
